All About the U.S. Government

Lesson 1 - A Republic

What is a government? In its simplest form, a government is a group of people who make decisions and control or enforce those policies and laws for a group of people.

There are many kinds of governments. There are monarchies, where a king or queen rules the people. There are dictatorships, where one person makes all the rules and laws. Then there are democracies, where the people vote on laws and policies.

"Democracy" has come to mean a form of government in which the government derives its power from the people and is accountable to them for the use of that power.
The United States is one kind of democracy, called a ...

Federal Democratic Republic

* It has a system of a Federal Government.
* It is democratic because the people govern themselves.
* It is a republic because the Government’s power is derived from its people.

A Republic

A Republic is a government where many people vote for a person to represent them (called a representative), and the representative will then vote and make policies and laws on behalf of the people who voted for them.

A Republic:

* Has a written constitution of basic rights that protect the minority from being completely unrepresented or overridden by the majority.

* Has constraints on the government that the majority cannot take away certain inalienable rights.

* All eligible citizens get equal say in decisions with protection of unalienable rights to individuals.

* The elected are bound by oath to the written governing limits (i.e. constitution) yet vote "together" and create laws to address concerns of the represented people in a democratic way

* Freedom of religion is permitted.

* Private property is permitted.

* All citizens have an equal say and so are treated equally by the government

* We have free elections & voting to change things.

* The U.S.A.'s Constitution clearly shows the U.S. as a Republic, Article 4, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution

Section 4

Section 4 says:

The United States shall guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government, and shall protect each of them against invasion; and on application of the legislature, or of the executive (when the legislature cannot be convened) against domestic violence.
